Dr. Aubrey Traina is a Louisiana native. She attended the University of New Orleans for undergrad, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a minor in chemistry in 2014. At the age of 14, she enrolled in the AquaKids Program at the Louisiana Aquarium of the Americas, opening up the amazing world of exotic and aquatic medicine. Dr. Traina continued to volunteer in the husbandry department at the Aquarium along with working as a veterinary technician at Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital of Louisiana throughout undergrad and during veterinary school. Dr. Traina graduated from Louisiana School of Veterinary Medicine in 2020 with honors, diversity and business cords and was the President of the Wildlife, Avian, Zoological and Exotic Medicine Club (WAZEM) and the Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment (VOICE). Dr. Traina was also a Raptor Co-Chair with the Louisiana Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana where she rehabilitated and cared for birds of prey. She attended the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine during vet school and received her Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist License in 2019.
Dr. Traina loves to treat all exotic companion animals, especially avian and aquatics and hopes to complete her Avian Residency board certification in the near future. Dr. Traina was the first place recipient of the ZuPreem National Exotic Medicine Scholarship in 2019. She’s known becoming a veterinarian has been her vocation since she was 5 years old. Growing up, her family had a mini menagerie including parakeets, hamsters, millipedes, sugar gliders and even a pot-bellied pig that was house trained! She is filled with gratitude that she is in an amazing profession where she can save animals’ lives, teach others and give back to her community at the same time. She is passionate about exotic medicine because there is always something new to learn and often requires you to think outside of the box.
In her free time, she loves to scuba dive, hike, bike and is an avid Saint’s football fan. Her personal critters include her German Shepard dog, Letty; Siamese mixed-breed cat, Binx; and her adorable axolotls Benny, Jette, Chernobyl “Cherry” and Newt. She has cared for salt-water fish tanks and sugar glilders for over a decade. Being raised in the South, it should be no surprise that her favorite food and season is… crawfish!!
